Well, Vista came out with SP1 recently, resulting in many many updates on my newly installed Vista Ultimate.

these are the notable changes made

Improved third-party support for software and hardware
Increased application compatibility (updates can be obtained via Windows Update after installation of SP1)
Support for DirectX 10.1
Better responsiveness in resuming, shutting down, and sleep (hibernation)
Some “sleep” problems fixed (Many were unable to put their computer to sleep)

- Reduced power consumption or improved battery life
- Addresses several problems that allow the computer unable to hibernate or go to sleep
- Improves speed for copying files, extracting, and compressing files:

• 25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same computer
• 45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
• 50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system

- Reduced glitches occuring during media performance
- Improves the time to read large images by 50%
- Shutdown time improved
- Improved resume times
- Enhances Firewall and IPsec cryptographic algorithms

High Cost Of Living

Recently things have been going up. It can be pretty depressing for many people since out of so many things that is going up, the salary that comes in every month is still basically the same. One prominent increment which people will notice is the increase in the erection of erp gantries. If you are complaining, well wait a while longer, because more gantries are gonna open. There will be a total of 65 gantries operating by this year. Well recently, i just went to CHEC to compile some papers. Taking the usual AYE>>ECP>>exit rocher, it cost $3 to enter Bugis.

probably in due season, we shall see erp coming to a place near you

Maybe next time, we all have IU unit attached to us like a watch and we can pay when we take the lift up, this is also to prevent congestion and overloading the lift.

Petrol Prices have been skyrocketing since last year, of course recently it dropped by 4 cents. but whats 4 cents compared to 13 increment since last year?

Well, the increment of Petrol Prices ignite the increment for Cab fares.

Remember the time we would talk about taking 240 which literally means taking cab(flagdown price is $2.40)?
well, right now numbers have changed from 240 to 250 to 280 to 300 now 330
for those that hasnt been observant, cab fares are now in multiples of 20cents instead of 10 cents
as they go by increment of every 20 cents for every 385 metres
compared to the old 10 cents for every 210metres

Okie the word to use now is 'inflation', you dont need to hear the word from a degree holding economist but anyone on the street has this word in their mind. Kindly note that peak hour has long been changed from $2 to 35% of fare.

okie buying homes to stay has always been high and still slowly escalating.
your typical tze char has increased from $3 to $3.50
while your roti prata has increased from $0.60 to $0.80
coke at coffeeshops are slowly following the trend by increasing to $1.30

Okie electrical bills have been skyrocketing also
due to the oil barrel increment, electricity tariff have been adjusted again and again
a search in www.singaporepower.com will show that

Before July 2005 rates are 16.06 cents per KWH
July- Dec 2005 18.26 cents per KWH
then it was 20.52>>21.88
current rates from July 2008 stands at a whopping 25.07 cents per KWH

things looking bleak, its has been announced that employers are told not to offer increment as a solution for inflation, well offering increment will result in employers getting more foreign talents to serve the roles of fellow singaporean, leaving the unemployment rate to go up so this is perfectly logical. Unemployment rates up and employees getting a far less deal than desired will result in drained out of local talents. So much things have increased, i cant really catch up with all the increment...

Childhood Prophesy

Adrena told me a few months back that she had a crush on me when we were in primary school, well recently we found an entry in her primary school diary which she write in p3/4. Haha how cute... i did not know how to use 'jump for joy' till like primary prob primary 5.

Our Yellow Day

a week of sighs and yeahs!

well its been so long since i last blogged, have been so caught up with many stuff that blogging isnt very high up on the priority now. Well so many things to blogged, i shall just slowly slowly blogged them as time goes by and when i feel more like typing more.

this week or weeks has/have been a week of sighs
been to acer service centre one time too many
it all happen when my laptop produced distortion or laggy sounds
resulting in slight lagginess in the computer

so with all faith, i went down to acer
so that they could solve my problem
after all my warranty ends in sept 2009
they changed my motherboard and i thought all was good
then i went back home on express 502
halfway through i tried to startup my laptop
somehow my lappie just cant get started
so i had to make a U-turn back to acer again
battery component in motherboard was spoilt
whats the point of replacing the motherboard with another one that is faulty somewhere else
spent a total of 5hrs at acer service centre

Went back and on way back, realise that the audio socket was faulty
i was already sian and disappointed by acer service
given the replacement of refurbished motherboard which was not checked through enough

then came the hdd breaking down.
I have never experienced any of my hdd corrupted
i was fed up and i needed to back up my stuff
my 160gb external hdd was with alice and alice has gone to macau

well done!
so i backed up my stuff to another laptop with a 2gb thumbdrive
thank God for a 2gb thumbdrive and not a 512mb one
hdd corrupting result in really slow transfer
a 2gb transfer takes ard half an hour to take place
some photos and files were gone also

wrote a feedback to acer and ask them to give me a call so that i can really feedback to them
waited a couple of days and none called
so i had to call them to direct me to the right person
so that i can direct my grievances to

okie got a satisfactory answer finally
they are gonna replace my laptop with another model
and its brand new =)

well this model is a tad heavier which is really a bane as i bring my laptop about and having a light laptop would really be neat. The 3012 which i am holding is only 1.5kg and this is 2.0kg which is abt the same weight as a 14inch i think. I was really attracted to this EEEPC which i saw someone in the neighbourhood using.

At least Acer gave me a satisfactory answer. Was really upset with them abt making multiple trips down to their service centre

Goodbye Mr Kelvin Tan

Dear Mr Kelvin Tan,
Thanks for teaching me for 2 years from 1998 to 1999 and for some of us, you might have known that for some of us, we just address you as Kelvin Tan. 10 years ago when you taught us, you were young, just out of NIE, filled with zest to impart your knowledge with us. There were some friction between the us and him and i must admit that you wasnt that well received. We were all young rebellious and he was inexperienced. I could still remember you in your signature shirt and tshirt combination when you came for class.
Days ago, Wendy smsed to say that you passed away suddenly. I flipped through the papers for the obituary and saw your face. I tried to recall if your name was Tan Chay Hong but could not remember anything but that picture in the papers could not be mistaken.
Went to your wake yesterday night, some of the 4K people were there. Spoken to your mum and found out what happened, saw the photos on the wall, you have really grown so much thinner in Zhonghua. Through your mum, we knew that you delayed seeking the doctor due to your commitments at work and conditions aggravated.
10 years ago, you were just a young teacher teaching us, 10 years later, you passed away.
Though i do not know you personally or remember that i have any contact with you within the timeframe of 1998-1999, your demise just kept me thinking about life and how short life could be. Truly standard of living and quality of life are not exactly the same.

Through all these, you taught me/us another lesson....prob a final one

Thanks Mr Tan, rest in peace... =)

So here's my report on the event.
Eve of the proposal, mr ken called me to say that he bought the wrong media for the videocam which led us going down to moustafa at midnight to get the dvd-r. He gave a long description with photos of the meetup point the next day for the surprise.
Me and his other member met early, linked up at jurong east mrt to go down to kranji together. With 2 pairs of groggy eyes, we made our way across to malaysia which we were supposed to take the 170 bus to kota raya, which mr teo has instructed and then the senai airport bus to the airport. After which we bashed our way through a 15mins stretch of rough uneven terrain through grass and rubble before we hit elite flying club. Fastforward the story, we waited for them to land at the apron.

so basically as you would have read in ken and qin's blog, Qin din know that ken got his pilot license until that very moment which ken asked her to mount the plane, then he popped the proposal question with a diamond ring, got on his knees and asked qin. err ok...i'm kidding on the got on his knees part. He was flying the plane remember?
so how cool is that? oh yah, the cost of the proposal was claimed to be around $15,000(i've rounded that figure).

recently did a facelift to my room, furniture's gone old and bed is giving way so here's some pictures of the overhaul.

the assembling of the book shelves and sofa bed was pretty siong but i was really amazed how the furniture could be erected by assembling them up like lego with no drilling involved.

Dear Body Parts

Exams ended today
so here's a note to my various body parts to acknowledge their contribution in this grueling exam

to my brain:
thanks for cramming all the info and squeezing them out for every paper. Recently you have been working through the night and into the morning, then you rest a while and continue to work again. Formulas after formulas, values after values. From trying to squeeze last minute french vocab to memorising the code of conduct of an engineer to the wsdl codings and waveforms in digital comm, you have the biggest credit.

to my hands:
thanks for all the finger power, for your owner believes in memorising through writing. You work even harder when the time draws near to the paper, furiously scribbling all the theoretical and the practicals. Throughout the semester, you actually did one entire report handwritten as requested by the prof though you doubt his intention of asking you to do it the most primitive way when the whole wide world is using the pc.

to my eyes:
tired weary withdrawn eyes. recently you grew swollen dark eyebags, an outcome from the sleepless nights. Coffee helped in keeping you open. Well, tough times are over, its time to get some rest.

to my body:
supper after supper and multiple late nights have resulted you getting sloppier and bloated. Its time you work and shed some of yourself off. You went through a brutal macdonalds/hor fun/ tze char/ ah lian bee hoon diet, its time to redeem urself.
